Happy three years, CoreOS

Happy birthday CoreOS! Three years ago, we celebrated the first release of CoreOS Linux. Since then we have marked that as our overall company birthday – the CoreOS “epoch”. Over the last three years we’ve built solid open source infrastructure software that’s making the Internet more secure by increasing the velocity of engineering teams and the reliability of site operations for organizations around the globe.
We are delighted at the progress we have made, and how we’ve advanced distributed computing, making the resilience and agility of GIFEE more widely accessible to businesses and developers.

CoreOS Linux: Our namesake project is used by thousands of developers and hundreds of businesses throughout the world. We recently launched CoreOS Linux in China, so users there can more easily deploy CoreOS and receive automatic software and security updates.

etcd key value data store: We started working on etcd in our garage in Palo Alto three years ago and now it is the backbone for projects such as Kubernetes, Canal and hundreds of other projects. In the last 35 days, etcd has been pulled from Quay.io repository 3.5 million times! Yesterday we released etcd v3 and we are excited about the improved scale etcd can provide to users.

Container security and portability: CoreOS paved the way for container security by announcing the rkt container engine and appc runtime spec in December of 2014. CoreOS kicked off the container security and standards discussion, which culminated in the creation of the Open Container Initiative with CoreOS, Docker, and dozens of other leading organizations uniting to work on container runtime and image standards.

Kubernetes contributions: When Kubernetes began development two years ago, we immediately recognized the value of the project and how it would underpin GIFEE (Google’s Infrastructure for Everyone). The CoreOS team members are leading contributors to the Kubernetes project and have moved the project forward with a number of major features. Tectonic, the enterprise Kubernetes solution: As we worked hand-in-hand with cutting-edge companies, we realized that the data center was changing, and that cloud-native techniques were achievable for on-premises and hybrid infrastructure. Choosing Kubernetes as the container orchestrator, we began offering Tectonic to provide companies with a way to dynamically schedule containers on massively distributed clusters and scale applications horizontally and seamlessly. Today, we offer a full platform for Kubernetes container clusters in the enterprise, complete with training, professional services, and support.

Quay Enterprise: We realized early the importance of providing a container registry with enterprise features for both hosted and on-premises delivery. We announced Quay Enterprise in August 2014 and have delivered enterprise features such as georeplication, continuous garbage collection, container image vulnerability scanning, and fine-grained access controls.

Distributed Trusted Computing: In December 2015 CoreOS announced the world’s first Distributed Trusted Computing (DTC) platform with Tectonic DTC, meaning it is now possible to cryptographically verify everything from the hardware layer to the application layer to sharpen the cluster security stance in enterprises.

Policy based networking for cloud native applications: At CoreOS Fest this May, flannel by CoreOS joined with Project Calico to create Canal. By combining flannel’s robust SDN features with Project Calico’s powerful policy controls, Canal aims to deliver the “best of breed” networking solution for the cloud-native stack. Now under leadership from Tigera, Canal is poised to be the container networking solution of choice.

Container storage: With the introduction of Torus, we are exploring the new rules that define container cluster storage, and what data persistence means in a massively distributed world.
Looking back, what we’ve been able to be a part of in just three years is enormous. The team at CoreOS has worked at amazing speed, alongside the community, to help make an array of open source components that improve the efficiency and security of the entire industry. Atop that work, we’ve created a compelling suite of enterprise products that are pushing the boundaries of development agility, service reliability, and infrastructure security in the modern data center.
